THE LURE

Directed by: Tomas Leach
Description

Film

In 2010, art dealer Forrest Fenn buried a cache worth millions somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Publishing a cryptic poem with clues to its location, the eccentric millionaire offered the Fenn Treasure up for grabs to anyone who could find it – and tens of thousands have heeded his call. Executive produced by Errol Morris, and with an original score by Calexico, The Lure tells the story of this legendary buried treasure, as revealed through a number of treasure hunters, each driven by something more than simple wealth.

Description

Film

Routinely estranged brothers Mat (Josh Lucas) and Alan (Stephen Plunkett) are equally unhappy, but the former embraces chaos and rudeness while the latter conceals his discontent. With both their lives on a downhill slide, Mat and Alan are temporarily reunited as roommates, uneasily sharing a Harlem apartment. Judd Greenstein and Michi Wiancko's bracingly modernist score sets the tone for this Arnaud Desplechin-esque study of shared familial dysfunction, brimming with smart, hostile talk aggressively filmed by writer-director John Magary.

Description

The question, posed in Langston Hughes’ classic poem Harlem, lies at the heart of The University of Sing Sing, an inspiring 40-minute HBO Documentary Films presentation. The film brings viewers inside the walls of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility, where some 1,700 men serve out lengthy sentences, often for violent crimes. Many of the inmates have found hope, and a new state of mind, through Hudson Link, a privately funded non-profit organization that offers college courses and the opportunity to earn a diploma. Immersed in a curriculum that includes the study of books like Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and Plato’s The Cave, the prisoners bring insight and enthusiasm to the classroom. Their hard work culminates in an emotional graduation, where their tenacity is an inspiration to all. Through interviews with professors, students and their families, this illuminating film reveals the true value of education, and its ability to give those in need a second chance. “They’re no longer the men who ended up in prison,” one professor insists. “They’re new people, transformed by education.”

Description

Film

Documentary Feature

In THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris (THE FOG OF WAR) offers a mesmerizing portrait of Donald Rumsfeld, the larger-than-life figure who served as George W. Bush’s secretary of defense and as the principal architect of the Iraq War.

Rather than conducting a conventional interview, Morris has Rumsfeld perform and explain his “snowflakes” — the enormous archive of memos he wrote across almost fifty years in Congress, the White House, in business, and twice at the Pentagon. The memos provide a window into history — not as it actually happened, but as Rumsfeld wants us to see it.

By focusing on the “snowflakes,” with their conundrums and their contradictions, Morris takes us where few have ever been — beyond the web of words into the unfamiliar terrain of Rumsfeld’s mind. THE UNKNOWN KNOWN presents history from the inside out. It shows how the ideas, the fears, and the certainties of one man, written out on paper, transformed America, changed the course of history — and led to war.

With TABLOID, Errol Morris further redefines and pushes the boundaries of documentary film with the tale of Joyce McKinney and the infamous "Case of the Manacled Mormon." In 1977, Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney flew to England with a pilot and a bodyguard to abduct the love of her life. Or was it to liberate him from a cult? Joyce, all of the people that cross her path, and the British tabloids help construct an epic RASHOMON-like tale that is as hilarious as it is unbelievable. Part black comedy, part film noir, TABLOID is always surprising and features one of the most captivating characters of Morris's career.

Feature Film

In a snowy, picturesque New England town, an invisible dividing line exists between local blue-collar residents and the privileged, Ivy League-reared students of a prestigious boarding school. Little interaction exists beyond a general, resentful acknowledgement of the other. But beautiful and reckless boarding school senior Natasha Tabor doesn’t care about much of anything, let alone unspoken social rules. When she eyes Danny, a ski lift operator from the other side of town, she is immediately intrigued, ensnaring him in a doomed relationship. Natasha is soon tapped by her secret society, the Deep Powder Alpine Country Club, to make its annual drug run to Ecuador, a tradition funded by the social club’s alumni who use the yearly trek to score an allotment of high-grade cocaine. Flush with cash and coasting on waves of adrenaline, Natasha and Danny set off on a journey that she foolishly convinces him is without danger but that ultimately leads to devastating outcomes for everyone involved. Inspired by true events from the early ’80s, Deep Powder is an intense and sexy drama that speaks to the character that is revealed when you find yourself trapped.
